WHO REALLY MOVED MY CHEESE?

I would like to throw a question to the floor before I continue.

What’s one thing that is definitely happening and can never be stop?

Ladies and Gentlemen: Madam General Evaluator, Heroic Toastmasters and honorable guests. A very magnanimous afternoon to all of you. Today, I want to share with you about my experience with a group of friends acting out a skit called WHO MOVED MY CHEESE.

But before that, does anyone have the answer to my question?

CHANGE!!!

Change, ladies and gentlemen. Change is definitely going to take place and we do not have any power at all to stop it from occurring. It is likely to happen at any place, at any time, at any day whether we like it or not.

Talk about changes to country, the earth, and us. All things changes.

Have you heard of the story “Who Moved My Cheese?” I am pretty sure that every one of you has stumbled upon it. Dr. Spencer Johnson created the story of “Who Moved My Cheese?”

Well, for the benefit of those who have never heard of it before, let me share with you a glimpse of the story. A moving story about 2 little people and 2 mice and their journey in search of a new cheese station. The 2 little people are the kind who takes things for granted, enjoying every moment pleasantly as it passes meanwhile the 2 little mice are the kind of people who are aware of the changes that took place and decided to move on to a new place instead of staying at the same old place.

It tells us about one little people named Haw took after realizing his mistakes and his journey that he endeavor to find new place where cheese can be found. While his friend, Hem sat nicely in her old place doing nothing at all.

What have I learnt from the story?

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The little people and the mice are the kind of people who we can relate with. It is a display of our own self and personality.

The cheese at cheese station A & D is a metaphor of the changes that is taking place in our life.

The Angel & Devil represent the obstacles that we are going to face in our journey.

The journey Haw took represents the process that we have to go through in keeping pace with the changes.

In simple words, this story is a metaphor of our willingness and endeavor to change and accept changes in our life. What we go through in order for us to change and what we are going to face in the future.

So, Ladies and gentlemen,

Who really moved my cheese? And who really moved your cheese?

Actually, nobody can move the cheese. And nobody can take you to a new cheese station. It is you!!! You are the one who is responsible to move the cheese. It is you who has the ability, power, strength and willingness to move with the changes. It is not your husband our wife, husband, sisters, brothers, neighbor, superior, subordinates.

No body is going to do that for us. Nobody can change you!! It is ONLY YOU! You can either accept those changes and try to adapt to it. Or we can just ignore it and pretend like nothing happened.

If you are the kind of people who choose to accept adapt to those changes. Give yourself a tap on the back.

If you choose to ignore changes and stick to your old belief, I feel pity for you. You are going to be stuck at your own Cheese Station for the rest of your life.

I know that each and everyone of us have are afraid of changes because we believe we do not have control over what or when s

Ladies and gentlemen,

DON’T DWELL IN THE PAST! THE SOONER YOU LET GO OF THE OLD CHEESE, THE SOONER YOU WILL FIND NEW CHEESE.

That is one of the lines in WHO MOVED MY CHEESE. It is also another lesson that I have learned from it.  How long are we going to stay in our so called “ comfort zone” when we knew that things are changing rapidly around us?

Yes… There are doubt and fear installed inside but that should not be an obstacle for us to move with the change. Like the Devil in the story itself, it basically represents all the negativity in your own mind. You are the only one who can stop yourself from doing anything and you are the one who determines your own path.

Do you know that our mind is divided into 3 parts. The conscious mind, the sub-conscious mind and also a middle layer that acts as a filter between those 2 parts. In a motivation training that I attended few weeks back, I have learnt that you control your mind, your action and what you are thinking. If you are being negative, it will start to mount in your mind and soon, you will be the looser who you thought you were earlier. But, if you implanted in your mind, that you are not afraid, with gods grace, you will success no matter how hard you fall.

Yes, There are going to be an obstacle that is trying to stop us from moving ahead with change. People who is going to bring us down, fears and uncertainty lurking in the future.

But that is part of the journey that is going to make it worthwhile and fulfilling. Remember ladies and gentlemen, successful people are those who fail and learn from it and not those who fails and quit.

Let me share with you 3 steps on how to succeed at CHANGE.

Step 1 : Preparing for a change.

Step 2 : Gaining Change Skills

Step 3 : Achieving a Change

Ladies and gentlemen, we should brace and prepare ourselves for a change. That is the only way for us to move ahead and stands out among the crowd.

I hope after this, everyone would go back home and start thinking about change.

For those who are married, I am not asking you to change your husband or wife. I don’t want to be in trouble for that okay.

I leave you with 3 lessons that we can find from the story.

  • “Old Beliefs Do Not Lead You to New Cheese”
  • “When You See that You Can Find And Enjoy New Cheese, You Change Course”
  • “Noticing Small Changes Early Helps You to Adapt to The Bigger Changes That Are to Come”

P/S : This was the speech that I gave for the TOASTMASTER MEETING last friday.
